As we left Whitefish Point, the fog dissipated and we travelled through the lush greens of the Upper Penninsula to Tahquamenon Falls. The water of the Tahquamenon River is the color of rich maple syrup due to the abundance of dissolved rich organic material, including tannic acid, from the decomposing cedar, hemlock, and spruce forest in the watershed.

Gitche Gumee
Gordon Lightfoot fans remember Whitefish Bay, which is where we visited the Iroquos Point Lighthouse and Whitefish Bay Light Tower, on Lake Superior. The day was bright and beautiful as we drove from Loons Point Campground in Cedarville to Iroquois Point, then as we approached Whitefish Point the fog rolled in, reminiscent of the way it covers San Francisco so quietly and quickly.
